It should come back. Just be careful, Korra. It sounds like they've got a lot in common with chi-blockers.
( she probably doesn't need the lecture on her safety, but. it's the only thing he can do from this side, and so it's what she gets. he's worried. )
It's fine over here. Some creatures called 'kelpies', but that's really the only thing we've run into yet. They'll grab you if you get too close, but they seem to calm down if you leave them alone.
( nevermind that she has no idea how to do that, it's the sentiment!! speaking of. she can recognize the strain in mako's voice as concern born from their distance - he'd probably prefer to be at her side, fighting with her, as much as she's rather be by his. something about his worry and distanced mothering soothes her. )
Kelpies? ( uhhhh ) Like, kelp? ( are you getting beaten up by seaweed monsters mako )
Or you could stay out of their way entirely. That seems like a better plan. When your waterbending's working you could also try to bend them into a single area and lock them in with earth.
( it's not always about punching things, you fighty girl of his. )
And, uh. No. They're... horsefish. Fishhorses? Someone on my end called them kelpies. I think it's some sort of mythological creature from a place called 'Earth'.
( it's not unusual for any of them to not return home at the end of the day, really, but bolin's absence has been. noted. korra has told herself not to worry, has tried to remain reassuring and optimistic for mako's benefit.
but there comes a time when you have to let reality sink in. mako's been out searching, korra's been at home in case he comes back. it's been a pink flying bison in the room, unnamed until mako breathed life into it. korra sighs, heavily. )
Why don't you come back, Mako? It's getting late. I can cook us up something.
( there's a surge of anger at her words, and an immediate desire to yell at her. food's not going to fix anything, it's not going to change his brother being gone, it's not.
but no. deep breath. she doesn't deserve that from him, and it'd probably just make him feel worse. he doesn't bother responding, though, because he's not sure he can control the urge. and he takes the long way back, too.
once he's in their room and he sees her, all the anger melts away like slag metal and leaves just the sadness in its wake. and he realizes the only thing he really wants to do is hold her, so he goes over and butts into her space and does just that, pulling her tightly against him and resting his cheek against her hair. )
( she's oblivious to any anger, but honestly, she'd take it in stride. she's grown mature enough to know the difference between real anger and just - needing to yell, and she'd willingly be that dummy for him, if he needed it. it's an unfair situation, worst of all because they didn't get to say goodbye. korra's bothered by it, worried after bolin, but it's a backburner, secondary thing. she loves bolin, but she knows he can take care of himself. he's not her brother.
at the room, korra is just busying herself by the stove. she's not a great chef or anything, but she knows it's kind of a thing for mako, so maybe sentiment will speak louder than words. it's definitely a waterbender's attempt at firebender food - seafood and noodles, and it's probably still not spicy enough, despite her best effort. when mako wraps around her, she's swift in moving back into his space, arms wrapped around his middle, squeezing tightly. )
C'mere.
( if he isn't here enough. she shortly goes from being held to holding him, reaching her hands up and wrapping around his giraffe's neck, to tug him further down into the curvature of her shoulder. )
( he lets her adjust their positions without protest, could hardly ever object to being closer to her. he knows she's being gentle with him as if he's something fragile, and there's that street-kid part of him that rankles at it. but it's just... love, from korra, and he does his best to accept it from her instead of making everything worse the way he always does.
he lets her take some of his weight, fingers finding purchase in her shirt and against her skin wherever his hands have fallen to. )
That idiot. He didn't even say goodbye.
( it's a tired attempt at anger, obviously manufactured rather than felt. his voice is muffled against her shoulder, barely audible. )
( there's a hand at the back of his neck, and one caught in the ink of his black hair, soothingly rubbing him up and down in slow, broad strokes. her breath catches on him, a half, humorless laugh. )
You know, he probably would've cried too much to get out a goodbye.
( it's an attempt at being reassuring, but ... it doesn't really stick. korra doesn't want to think about him crying, she just. wants him to be here. more for mako's benefit than her own. )
Bolin and goodbyes doesn't really add up, though. He's always there when you need him.
